What engine can I put in a Peugeot 306 XSI 16V?

Can I use engine from any other vehicle and is there an engine code/number I need to look out for?
The car is a V reg and I want an engine which is like for like and easy for a garage to swap for the broken one in it at the moment.

Before deciding on a different engine, you MUST consider the wiring looms, the motor mounting points, THE TWO UNEQUAL length driveshafts of the 306, and the height of the engine under the bonnet. Sorry kiddies, no 426 hemis :) from Chrysler in the 1960's,
