Filling a need
The Army said no the first time Chet Gibson tried to sign on.
It wasn't long after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, triggering America's entry into World War II, that the 24-year-old reported to a recruiting office. In doing so, he joined many of his contemporaries.
But when Army officials heard Gibson was a logger, they turned him down. He was doing an essential service, so he would be more valuable continuing his work on the home front, they said.
The second time Gibson tried to join up, a dozen years later, the Army said yes.
This time, he could provide a different kind of essential service. Gibson was now a dentist, and the soldiers serving in Korea needed one.
Working in poor conditions with substandard equipment, he filled cavities and pulled teeth at an Army field hospital. It was all about preserving health and relieving pain.
There was neither call nor time for cosmetic procedures. "I did what was necessary," he said.
