You won't damage the transfer case; it's shift-on-the-fly and perfectly safe (which is exactly why the manual tells you it's ok).

Erie police released a video Thursday of two vehicles involved in a Tuesday morning shootout as authorities continued a search for suspects in a Pittsburgh man's shooting death.
The video, taken from the Shell station at East Sixth and Parade streets, shows a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a minivan that police said were involved in an exchange of gunfire at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. A witness reported that six to seven shots were fired, and police said two shell casings were later recovered from the scene.
The video shows the two vehicles entering the Shell gas station lot, and then leaving heading west, police said.
Erie police released the video in hopes of generating information about the owner and the whereabouts of the minivan.
State police said the Grand Cherokee is believed to be the same vehicle that troopers found partially parked in the southbound passing lane of Interstate 79 shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday. Mark A. Washington, 34, of Pittsburgh, was found dead in the passenger seat. He had been shot in the head and the neck, state police said.
