ACCC warns against price gouging
20.11.11
Businesses in Western Australia have been put on notice by the national competition watchdog that they will face tough action if they try to price gouge after the introduction of the carbon tax next year.
The new head of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Rod Sims, says organisations must not misrepresent price rises as being driven by the new tax.
Mr Sims addressed a business audience at the WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry this morning.
He says the ACCC is determined to ensure that consumers are not duped into accepting excessive price increases in goods and services by businesses falsely blaming it on the carbon tax.
"So, the key point is if a business raises its price and says that the increase is the result of carbon pricing or even partly the result of carbon pricing, it must ensure that they've got reasonable grounds for saying what they're saying," he said.
The tax comes into effect on the first of July next year.
Mr Sims says customers should critically scrutinise any price rise attributed to the new tax.
