Ford 7.3L diesel stalls out on cold starts?

It's an '89, the IH engine. When it's been sitting overnight, I have to rev really high (>3000rpm) immediately after starting, or it will stall out. If it does stall out, I have to use WD-40 in the air intake to get it to start again. While I'm revving

sounds like you have a fuel problem with the fuel bleeding off when it sits for a long time. sounds like there might be a small leak in a fuel line or the pump or filter housing allowing the fuel to drain back into the tank which causes it to run out
