Evinrude 225HP Exhaust Smoking?

My 1998 Evinrude 225HP (carburated) is spewing smoke at idle and more when I increase engine RPM. The only change from last season is the addition of an inline Racor fuel filter/water separator. Any suggestions as to what to check?

My Mercury Black Max does that too and it's a fresh rebuild......it's just part of owning an older carburetor boat motor. It probably did the same thing before you added the filter, but you notice it more now because you are concious of it.
